Quelling a Burning Desire with Deborah Lippmann’s Through the Fire

While I was away this fall, something terrible happened – I missed the Chanel fall collection entirely!  Thankfully, there wasn’t too much I wanted to try, but I DID desperately want Malice, the gorgeous ruby-hued polish and the only one released with the seasonal launch.  As it disappeared from shelves in a snap, I was left to scour the internet trying to find a dupe to the shade.  What I came up with that was close (though by no means an exact match, or even that close, unfortunately), was Deborah Lippmann’s Through the Fire.

Through the Fire, a ‘radiant merlot hue’ was released as part of her 2012 Holiday collection (along with Cleopatra in New York).  While it doesn’t have the slight berry tinge that Malice appears to have, it still has that inner glow that captivates the eye.  Below, this is two coats with Poshe Fast Drying Top Coat.

Apparently, one of the true closer dupes to Malice is OPI’s Royal Rajah Ruby, which if you remember I was iffy about at first, but then found love using it as a pedi shade.  Personally I think RRR is too brown-leaning, but it pleases me that I have one of the closest colors to Malice already in my stash.

As for TtF, I pulled RRR plus a couple other shades to see how they all compare – OPI’s Every Month is Oktoberfest, which has been noted by other bloggers as a potential Malice twin (it’s not), and Misa’s Red Pumps at the Nordstrom (which isn’t like Malice at all, nor TtF – but is red and also has that gorgeous radiance about it).

While RRR is in the same vein as TtF, it’s not a dupe and I like TtF much better on my fingernails, as its more feminine with it’s red tones.  Though I tend to prefer cremes over other formulations of polish, I gotta say that these types of polishes with a less metallic shimmer and more of an inner fire, are totally up my alley.  I could stare at them all day!  All four of these polishes captivate my heart in one way or another, and while I don’t feel that my lemming for Malice is fully abated, I’m not totally broken-hearted over it 🙂

Did you pick up Malice, or did you miss it too?  Are you a fan of shimmer polishes, or other types?

I was lucky enough, mor should I say fast enough to get Malice. It’s funny because in the bottle the OPIs look so similar to Malice but when held next to Malice they are not even remotely close. My guess is: in a few more weeks Revlon will come out with I e that will be very close to Malice and will probably be the closest to a dupe one can find. Seems to be the pattern anyway. I love the DL on you, I think it is prettier than Malice. Thanks for such a complete comparison of the colors, I loved seeing them. Good job! As always!

Aww, thanks so much Judi!! I’m reassured by your words and I do hope Revlon comes out with a dupe – normally I’d rather the real thing, but since I won’t be getting it, I’ll have to go for the next best thing 😀

Oh my–Deborah Lippmann Through the Fire and OPI Royal Rajah Ruby are my favorites–they are SO gorgeous and glam! I don’t have any shades in my collection like this, now that I think about it…I need to fix this immediately!!

Oh my, yes you do Becca!! These types of colors are must-haves in my opinion, they’re sultry and sophisticated and perfect for any dressed-up event (or anytime, really 🙂

TTF looks beautiful on you! Malice is still available on Chanel’s website, but I don’t know if they ship to Canada. Also, here’s a link to a very comprehensive comp that shows Malice’s closest dupe being OPI Royal Rajah Ruby (which also is amazing on you). http://www.makeupalley.com/m_150206784

Thanks Lola 😀 Yea, that’s one of the ones I saw that made me feel a bit better about not getting Malice (though on me RRR still pulls more brown!). Sadly, Chanel.com doesn’t ship to Canada, or I would have grabbed it right quick!!

I actually really like that gradient you’ve got – I hope you wore it that way!

Through the Fire is on my wishlist, too. So gorgeous. Usually I feel like shades like that aren’t unique, but for whatever reason, that one has captivated me! 😛

    • #8 by Latoya on January 8, 2013 - 7:52 am

It is captivating, that’s why! 🙂 It’s definitely a purchase you wouldn’t regret, Larie. And because its not so glaringly red, it works for so many situations and seasons.

I didn’t wear the swatches out like that but now I wish I did! I’ll have to give it another go 😛

Ugh, I know, Malice!! It’s the first time I’ve come really close to spending that much on a polish. Usually, I have faith that I’ll be able to find a reasonably close dupe, but the whole reason Malice was so special was that signature Chanel shimmer. I did purchase the last one in my area as a gift for a family friend LOL, broke my heart to give that away I tell you! I love this red gradient mani you’re rocking here though, and that Deborah Lippman shade is pretty o.O Reds of all kinds will always have a special place in my heart.

Oh, also, what is that shiny ball thing you’re clutching?? I can’t figure it out!

Haha, it’s a Christmas decoration, I shot the pics last month. Pretty, isn’t it?

Malice will likely haunt me the rest of my days, but I’ll have to be satisfied with these shades. RRR really is quite close, if you really are desperate, MM. Funny you guys like the gradient lol! And I’m a sucker for reds lately too, so pretty 🙂

Never tries Deborah Lipmann, they don’t sell it in Italy, I guess. I LOVE the colour though!!!

    • #12 by Latoya on January 8, 2013 - 7:47 am

Oh no, they don’t carry Lippmann anywhere? Too bad. I bet you could get it online somehow… And yes, Through the Fire is gorgeous, Satine 🙂

I’m so out of the polish loop yikes. I don’t think I even remember Malice at all. But I like this one on you! Plus it’s cheaper!

    • #14 by Latoya on January 9, 2013 - 12:42 pm

Ohh you are lucky, Tracy! You don’t know what you’re missing then 🙂 don’t go looking at it either lol. This one is quite lovely though by rights, and yes, cheaper (not by much, sadly!)

Ooh, I love all of the polishes you swatched, so gorgeous! I can’t even pick a favorite.

    • #16 by Latoya on January 9, 2013 - 12:43 pm

That’s good to hear, Emi!! I like them all a lot too (though I do have a soft spot for ‘Oktoberfest’ :P).

I actually did pick up Malice & so totally regret not getting a back up when I had the chance. This Lippmann is one I’ve been considering since its launch, but I’ve yet to cave – your swatches are making me re-think that, though! Another Malice duplicate is the Lancome version released this past holiday (I’m still seeing it at some counters) and from online swatches I’ve seen, it is basically identical to the Chanel. Glad you were able to stem that lemming with something so close!

    • #18 by Latoya on January 9, 2013 - 12:46 pm

I remember about that Lancôme one now too, right! Hmmm…will have to investigate a bit. Though truth be told this is one of those shades I’d love to own in Chanel – I’m not a collector like you, but certain shades beg to be Chanel 🙂

Even though you own Malice, I’d definitely think about getting TtF Eugenia, it really is gorgeous!

I LOVE these colours on your nails! Malice, Shmalice. Initially I was wanting it but it passed and I still don’t really care for it. It’s beautiful in its own right, but I’m kind of over paying a lot for a nail polish lately. (Let’s buy more blush instead… :x)

    • #20 by Latoya on January 10, 2013 - 3:52 pm

Hehe agreed. I feel that way half the time – it has to be a really special color for me to shell out the $$…unfortunately, Malice felt like that for me – but fortunately I CAN’T spend the money b/c I can’t get my hands on it, soo…

Oh my GAH, Through the Fire is to. die. for. You’ve also inspired me to hunt down Royal Rajah Ruby, because the 5 or so I have clearly isn’t enough vampy shimmeriness for me…

    • #22 by Latoya on January 11, 2013 - 11:29 am

Haha oops. Sorry! But, they are both lemming worthy. I hope you get your hands on one or both of these Amy, can you ever REALLY have enough?!
